This great musket comes with some very good family provenance dating from 1904.  This includes a 3 page family letter stating that  John Frailey carried this musket later part of the American Revolution as originally because of his age(16) he was a fifer. The letter also states that the musket was to go to JFW (John Frailey Welch) . In the letter Rudolph Frailey ( John’ s brother) is said to have been a Sergt. and that the family still has his orderly book.  Also included are 4 pages of family lineage dating from Rudolph’s birth in 1757 to the death of Dr. John Rudolph Frailey in 1905. John Frailey was born in 1761 and died in 1848.  He joined the 1st Pa. Regt. Militia in 1777.  Refer to the cover sheet for his service.  He also joined the same unit in the War of 1812.
The musket itself is in nice untouched condition and stayed in the original family until 2010 when it was put up for sale in a Florida auction(auction papers will be included).
It is basically a French Charleville musket that has been restocked in American Curly Maple. The only other modification was the addition of a front and rear sight.  I believe the John Frailey 1776 carved in the stock was done by the family at some time in the 19th century as it has much age and wear to it but a different style than Rev.War writing.  Also, the touch hole has been spiked so the children can’t shot it . Rev. War muskets like this, with family provenace, are rarely found these days.  A wonderful addition to any Rev.War collection.
P.S In my reseacrh I also found in the Sept.4th, 1904 addition of the Washington Post a Wedding annoucement between Arthur Eugene Yundt and Beatrice Frances Frailey stating that she was the great, great, granddaughter Rudolph and Joseph(John)) Frailey of Revolutionary War fame and also a lineal descendent of Thomas Hayward Jr. a signer of the Declaration of Independence.
