1848 Colt
1848 Colt "Baby Dragoon"

A rare Colt Baby Dragoon with California Gold Rush heritage. This pistol is inscribed on it's back strap flat " From Freeman & Co. to C. McKee" I don't know who C. McKee was and perhaps further research will reveal that but I'm familiar with Freeman Co. They were a California Express Company formed in 1849 (refer to picture of the cover sheet for company history).  The pistol has all matching serial numbers (10345) which would make it's year of manufacture as 1849. The back strap and trigger guard exhibit 95% of their original factory silver plating. The oval stops cylinder serial number is still visible but the scene is gone. Overall the pistol has developed a pleasing blue-brown patina. The grips are in very good shape retaining about 90% of their original factory finish. I don't believe  I've seen a Gold Rush era Colt Baby Dragoon with Express Company markings before. A very rare and desirable piece of Western history.
