Mdl.1850 Presentation Grade Officers Sword

​A high grade mdl. 1850 Officers Sword made by the W. Clauberg ​sword firm of Soligen. ​The sword is in fine condition retaining most of it's original brown lacquer finish on it's scabbard. The mounts retain a good amount of their gold guilding .  The grip is in fine condition with all of it's original wrapping. Most of the gold guilding on the hand guard is only left in the protected areas with the Eagle Head exhibiting a Ruby eye. The blade still retains all it's patriotic motif's.  Also included with this historic piece is it's original sword knot which is in very shape. The original period inscription " ​Presented to Capt. J.J. Sherwood  93rd New York "  appears in one scabbaed panel  and "By his Friends at City Hotel Alex. Va." in the other.  Union Force's captured  Alexander,Va. on May.24, 1861 ​and occupied it throughout the War.

​Capt. J.J. Sherwood ​enlisted in the 93rd. New York Infantry on 9/24/1861 as a private and rose through the ranks to Captain on 12/24/1864.  He saw much action and was wounded at the Wilderness ​on May 5, 1864.  The 93rd  lost a total of 253 (KIA) and 433 (WIA) at the Wilderness. They went on to fight at Spotslvania Court House where they experienced 3 (KIA) and 34 (WIA} , at North Anna  6 (KIA) and 15 (WIA), at ​Cold Harbor  1(KIA) AND 1 (WIA), at Petersburg ​5 (KIA) and 19 (WIA), at Boydton Plank Road 5 (KIA) and 18 (WIA). 

This wonderful sword will  come with an extensive file containing may pictures and letters.
