This is a untouched  Mdl.1777 French musket in very good condition. It appears that all the wood is original and has taken on a nice even patina. The lock is still in it's original flint configuration and appears to have had it's name scrubbed during it's period of use.  The buttstock still retains it's original arsenal stamping.  With the scrubbing of the lock name and the addition of a rear sight cut into the barrel tang I believe this musket ended up in American hands.  The French were quietly supplying  us with arms in the early part of the War but after the Battle of Saratoga in the fall of 1777,  in which we showed our ability to defeat the British, they openly joined us in the War. As of Feb.1778 they declared War on England.  This historic musket will come with it's original Bayonet.
