1860 Colt Army
1860 Colt Army
A very historic pistol carried by a famous Indian Scout. This '60 Colt Army is inscribed on the back strap John O. Austin  Chief of Scouts Fort Dodge 1868. The inscrition is original to the period of the pistol with many dings and wear to the inscription. The pistol itself has all matching serial numbers with the exception of the cyl. which has no number because of wear but matches the condition of the gun.  I have a very thick file of photo's and the history of Capt. Austin  that will come with the pistolAmong the photo's is the very famous one of him and Lt. Read of the 3rd Inf. leaning over the scaped body of Buffalo Hunter Ralph Morrison Dec.7,1868 at Ft. Dodge, Kansas.  For years I mistakenly thought it was Buffalo Bill  in the photo.  I also have another of him guarding the Indian prisoner after the Battle of Washita.  In the picture he appears to be wearing a '60 Colt with the butt facing forwardCapt. Austin was a personal friend of Buffalo Bill and George A. Custer. A piece of early Western History
