Fireman 1st Class Holland received this sword from his New York friends when he enlisted in 1862 in the U.S  Navy.  He carried this sword throughout the War while serving on three blockade gunboats and capturing many blockade runners. He also participated in the bombardment of Ft. Fisher and supported Gen.Grant at Richmond and Petersburg.  The sword remains in pretty good shape with it's original shark skin scabbard. The shark skin has shrunk(as most do) which stops the blade from going all the way down in the scabbard. This is a very rare outfit  and I don't recollect ever seeing another Fireman's sword .
