C.W. Gen. Kitching's Mdl.1840 Officers Sword

The beautiful sword was carried by Brig. Gen. John Howard Kitching and is engraved  J. Howard Kitching  on it's handguard. The 33" curved blade is etched with military motifs and retains most of it's original factory polish and gold wash. The base of the blade is stamped C.R Kirchbaum - Solingen and exhibits his Knights head on the obverse side. The iron scabbard is brass trimmed and has taken on a attractive dark patina.

Gen. Kitching participated in some of the fiercest battles of the War while leading the 6th New York Heavy Artillery . His command suffered heavy casualties to include: Spotsylvania Court House  17 KIA 76 WIA,  Bethesda Church 18 KIA 64 WIA , Petersburg 10 KIA  84 WIA,  Cedar Creek 12 KIA 54 WIA. He died of wounds he received at the battle of Cedar Creek, Va. on 10/19/64.  A very attractive and  historic piece!
