This is an American blacksmith made Cutlass . For similar swords go to pages 182-183 in Geo. Newmann's"Swords & Blades of the American Revolution. This Cutlass was sold in 1987 by Samuel"Kappy"Kaplan from his collection and comes with his letter of authentification.  It also comes with a folder detailing the British ship HMS Ariadne's capture of the American ship USS Alfred commanded by Capt. Elisha Hinman in 1778 which is where the British acquired the sword. Lt. John Paul Jones had helped fit out the USS Alfred .  A great Cutlass with solid American Revolutionary War history.
