These are the fabled American Longrifles that struck terror into the heart of the British soldiers during the Revolution.  This rifle is in beautiful shape and with the exception of a few inches of splinter fore stock replaced(almost invisible) . I believe the lock may be a replacement which is also missing some internal parts but really not sure..  The octagon barrel is .54 cal. and 46" long with the neatest rear sight with a flip up long distance tab that I’ve ever seen.  It also has a early makers stamp.  The Rifle has a single set trigger which doesn’t hold on full cock because of the missing internal parts.  The buttstock is 2" wide and there’s a hole behind the trigger guard for the pheasant feather.  This great rifle just surfaced here in Pennsylvania which is the original home of these American Longrifles .  According to Geo. Shumway in his book on "Rifles in Colonial America" these early rifles were very seldom signed by the maker.  However this rifle does have a makers cartouche stamped in the barrel and a very unusual rear sight that might led to the original maker. The wooden patchbox mortise has two separate compartments which is highly unusual.
These early transition Longrifles are seldom offered for sale and as I said this gun is knew to the collecting fraternity.
